Orientation was sort of fun. Most of the time was spent watching a video for Target employees (oh sorry, Target team members) talking about harassment, safety, what to say to customers (guests), and the core values of the company. The video kept saying that the reason behind everything is to make Target the “best company ever.”
The information in the videos was mostly common sense, but it was mildly entertaining too. There are some protocol issues that I have to remember, but I’m fairly certain it’s not as hard as the actuarial exam I took. The most important part of the orientation is that I got paid for the four and a half hours I was there!
My first real day of work is tomorrow afternoon. Because of the store’s needs, I was switched from the cashier position to sales floor. That’s fine with me; sales floor is probably easier. I get to put things on shelves and ask people “Can I help you find something?” It sounds fun.
I wonder what department I’ll be put in. I think it would be fun to be in electronics, but I doubt I’d get to choose, even though I know a lot about electronics. I wouldn’t mind the skincare department either. It would be so fun to recommend skincare products for people. I could use my moderate knowledge of skincare to help people, but I don’t know if it’s in my job description to offer my opinion on what products I like.
Come to think of it, I know a lot about a lot of things in Target. I shop there all the time, and I’ve bought so many different things there. I’m getting more excited about working just thinking about it! I finally get to put all of my shopping knowledge and experience to use!
There are a lot of perks to working at Target too! I get a 10% employee (oh sorry, team member) discount, although I’m not supposed to use it for other people (for example, if friends offer to pay me back for buying things with my discount for them). I also have to use either cash, check, or a Target brand card. I can’t use non-Target credit cards or even gift cards. There are also discounts with Dell, Verizon, Sprint, and some other companies.
I think I also get discounts at food places in the mall that’s attached to the Target, but the Target people didn’t say anything about that. Actually, the Hot Dog On A Stick employee in the mall gave me a 10% discount off of my hot dog on a stick that I had for dinner, even before my orientation! She recognized that the red shirt and khakis I was wearing was the Target uniform. Maybe I should wear red and khakis to the mall more often, even after I stop working at Target!
